Compared to other accessory buildings, a garage is deemed a permanent structure in someone’s property. If you follow this concept, it is expected from owners to have a careful assessment before erecting these enclosed outbuildings. Therefore, it is wise to save your time, money, and effort by knowing what is a normal garage size for you.
The normal options
Along with choosing a size, make it a point that you also think of the number of vehicles you will own, who will use, and how you will use your garage normally. These are factors that can define what type and size of the normal and right garage for you.
To date, there are three popular types of garage sizes to choose from.
Normal single garages. If you own a regular size vehicle, then you need a single garage. You may also opt for this type even if you have two for as long as they are smaller transportation machines such as a motorbike or farm tractor. Usually, the average size of a single garage is 12×22 or 24 feet.
Double garages. If you have a big one or two regular-size vehicles, a double garage is the one for you. The average size of a double garage is typically 20 x 20 feet, but you can still find smaller ones such as 18 x 20 feet.
Experts also recommend a double garage if you are not sure when you have one or two vehicles. If you have one vehicle for now or in the future, at least you have the extra space to use. It can be a space for storing automotive tools or hobby equipment such as bikes and fishing rods.
Triple garages. This type is fit for an owner-builder with two or three vehicles, as well as for a family. A triple garage is a spacious shelter that can house various family needs. The extra area can serve as a venue for work, play, mingling, or leisure. The usual normal size of a triple garage is 32 x 22 feet.
These estimated normal sizes are a good starting point when you are in the phase of choosing a garage size. However, be aware that for each type, there are other size options. For example, in a triple garage size, experts recommended 36 x 25 or 40 x 30 feet, while for a single 16 x 24 or 14 x 24 feet garage.
The right size
For the right garage size, it is a must that you base it on your current and future need for a shelter building. The ultimate consideration is the size of your vehicles. One by one, know their dimensions. Add 2.5 to 6 feet for width to give clearance between a vehicle and a wall or door. Be meticulous with height for taller vehicles like a camper van, boat, or RV. Also, think of the door (s) the driveway, and setbacks of the garage.
It is smart to match your assessment with your local laws. Most of the time, the standard size and the changes you can only do are stated in your local laws.
