Metal garages are fast becoming popular among homeowners because they are extremely strong and long-lasting. No wonder more and more people are ditching wood as a material.
The problem with conventional garages
Many homeowners are unaware of the severe weather conditions that can damage or even destroy a wooden garage. In fact, a severe storm can cause far more damage to a wooden garage than to a steel or concrete one.
Wooden garages are particularly vulnerable to rot caused by mold and fungi. These microscopic organisms thrive in moist environments and can grow and multiply rapidly in and under a wooden garage. Over time, mold will seep into the wood and eventually destroy the structural integrity of the garage.
Metal is the least likely material to have this problem. As a matter of fact, if you maintain your garage meticulously and keep it free of dirt and debris, it will last a lifetime without any type of maintenance whatsoever.
Metal garage advantages
Metal garages are incredibly sturdy. They are far more robust than wood and have virtually no give whatsoever. This means they would not sag or twist, and they would not allow any rain or snow to damage your home. They are also much harder than wood and will not rot away. Even if left outside in the elements for a very long time, a metal garage will still be there for you when you need it. On top of that, metal garages are cheaper than wood garages.
Another advantage of metal is that it is impervious to termites. These tiny insects live in colonies and will eat everything in their path in order to obtain food. If they discover a nest of wood in your house, they will work tirelessly to chew their way through the wood until they reach the inner part of the house. Once there, they will eat everything in their path until they reach dry land. In the case of a wooden garage, this means they will eventually get to your house and, if they discover it, eat the wood surrounding your house as well as the garage.
Metal garage disadvantage
It is important to understand that not all metal is equal when it comes to longevity. You see, not all metal is rust-proof. For example, some metals that look like steel are not rust-proof at all. In fact, these types of metals will rust very quickly if they come in contact with water.
Other types of metal are only “rust-resistant” and will rust over time if proper care is not taken of them.
